Nike names former McDonald’s exec as new communication lead

Nike has appointed Michael Gonda, former communications lead at McDonald’s, as its new EVP and chief communications officer, effective on July 7. Gonda will report directly to Nike CEO Elliott Hill.

In his new role, Gonda will lead the sportswear giant’s communication strategy, including its corporate storytelling, brand image, and staff engagement.

He brings years of experience, having previously served as chief impact officer for McDonald’s North America and overseen communications for the company as global chief communications officer.

Gonda said: “Nike has always been more than a brand, it’s a storyteller, a cultural force, and a catalyst for belief.

“I’m deeply honored to join a company that has shaped how people see themselves and the world around them and am humbled to help Nike tell the stories that matter, connect even more deeply with athletes and communities, and write the next ambitious chapter with Elliott and this team.”

This appointment comes on the heels of many C-suite changes to Nike’s team as part of its broader turnaround strategy.

Hill added: “His vision for driving impactful communications, his instinct for building high-performing teams, and his ability to form authentic connections will help Nike amplify the voice of sport and athletes around the world in bold and meaningful ways.”

Meanwhile, the sportswear giant is dealing with challenges amid mounting pressure from tariffs as well as declining sales.

The sportswear retailer delivered a weak performance in its first quarter and is rethinking its strategy to stay afloat.

Recently, Nike also announced price increases aimed at offsetting the added expenses from additional tariffs.
