Discount retailer Variety Wholesalers is set to begin reopening a wave of former Big Lots locations this month, marking the first phase of its revival of the brand following Big Lots’ bankruptcy and nationwide closure.
Starting April 10, nine stores across six states will open their doors under the Big Lots banner, with more scheduled to follow in May and early June.
The company, which owns banners such as Roses, Roses Express and Maxway, purchased over 200 Big Lots sites in January.
The acquisition came shortly after Big Lots ceased operations across roughly 950 stores, following a failed sale to Nexus Capital Management.
The second group of approximately 55 stores is expected to open on 1 May, with additional phases continuing through early summer. A national grand opening event is planned for the autumn.
“We’re thrilled to bring the Big Lots! brand back to life by offering more deals than ever, lots of famous brands and a new apparel department for the entire family,” said Lisa Seigies, president and CEO of Variety Wholesalers.
“We’re opening stores quickly so we can serve the community. We know the stores won’t be perfect to start, but each week we’ll add more new products as we build towards the grand opening celebration in the fall.”
The relaunch represents a major growth move for Variety, which currently operates more than 400 value-driven stores across 18 states.
In addition to this initial rollout, Big Lots stores are expected to reopen in key markets including North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, as well as Alabama, Michigan, South Carolina, and West Virginia.
Stores opening in April include Mount Sterling, KY, Metairie, LA, Tupelo and Pearl, MS), Asheboro, NC, Dickson, Gallatin and Clarksville, TN, and Roanoke, VA.
