Arts and crafts retailer Michaels has appointed David Boone, a former Staples Canada executive and interim CEO at logistics firm Essendant, as its new CEO.
He will take on the role starting 28 February and will also join the company’s board of directors.
Boone succeeds Ashley Buchanan, who left in January to take the top job at Kohl’s. In the interim, Michaels’ president, chief financial officer, and chief merchant had jointly overseen operations.
His appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the crafting retail sector, as Michaels’ competitor Joann has recently filed for bankruptcy again and is closing around 500 of its 800 stores.
Michaels’ chairman Andrew Jhawar welcomed Boone’s appointment, highlighting his leadership and retail expertise.
“David is a proven business leader with the strategic vision, customer focus and vast retail experience to continue to drive Michaels’ forward,” he said.
Boone added: “Creativity has the power to bring people together, and I look forward to working alongside Michaels’ talented team leading this iconic company into its next chapter — driving innovation, strengthening our connection with the maker community, and ensuring Michaels remains the go-to destination where everyone can create and celebrate anything.”
Michaels, which has over 1,300 locations across the US and Canada, has been evolving since its $5 billion buyout by Apollo Global Management in 2021.
Recent initiatives include the launch of its online marketplace, a refreshed brand identity, expanded product discounts and partnerships with DoorDash, Uber Eats, and the Dallas Cowboys.
