Dollar General strengthens leadership amid store expansion

Dollar General has announced key leadership changes amid its ongoing national expansion.

Steve Deckard has been appointed executive vice president of strategy and development, where he will lead store growth, drive company-wide process improvements, and oversee strategic initiatives.

In addition, Tracey Herrmann has been promoted to executive vice president of store operations, taking responsibility for more than 20,000 locations across 48 states.

Both appointments took effect on 8 February 2025, the company confirmed on February 5. The leadership changes reflect Dollar General’s ongoing focus on store expansion.

Deckard, who has been with the company since 2006, previously served as executive vice president of store operations and development, overseeing store operations, real estate, and international growth. His tenure included leading the company’s first expansion into Mexico and the rollout of Popshelf.

CEO Todd Vasos credited Deckard with playing a key role in shaping Dollar General’s international strategy.

“I am confident his extensive knowledge of our business and its operations make him uniquely qualified for this new role,” he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Herrmann previously served as senior vice president of store operations, managing three divisions in the Southeast.

She also played a key role in Popshelf’s development, leading strategy and operations as senior vice president of channel innovation.

Dollar General remains focused on growing and enhancing its store network. Last year, the retailer reached a milestone by opening its 20,000th store and completed nearly 2,400 real estate projects, which included 800 new store openings, 1,500 remodels, and 85 relocations.

At the same time, the company has been streamlining its supply chain by reducing its reliance on temporary warehouse facilities. In the third quarter, Dollar General exited four temporary warehouses after previously closing 11.

In addition to Deckard and Herrmann’s new roles, the company has made other leadership changes to support its operations.

In December, Tom Hutchins was named senior vice president of technology, while Kevin Pinchon was appointed senior vice president of distribution.

While Dollar General continues to grow its store presence, its latest earnings report showed some financial challenges. Net sales increased by 5% year-over-year to $10.2 billion, but net income dropped 29% to $196.5 million. Comparable sales rose by 1.3% compared to the previous year.
